Part 11 - Talkeetna
Part 11 - Talkeetna
At breakfast in our hotel in Wasilla we could enjoy the beautiful view of Lake Lucille – only in the rain, unfortunately.
The drive to Talkeetna was equally rainy. Our first stop in Talkeetna was Talkeetna Air Taxi, with whom we had booked a sightseeing flight near Mt. McKinley at noon. However, they confirmed our assumption that there would be no flights that day with all the rain and fog in the mountains.
Their staff were very friendly and asked about our schedule for the next day. Since we were in no rush and had only planned to drive to Denali, our booking was changed to the next day. With the option to cancel or postpone to noon – depending on the weather conditions. Had we not had the time, they would have reimbursed our deposit. Talkeetna Air Taxi was vey accommodating, unbureaucratic and flexible.
Then we went to drop our luggage at the hotel. We had booked Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, which the cruise lines also offer for their cruisetours. We found the hotel and its log cabin style very inviting.
The hotel is built on a slope from which you can see all the way to Mt. McKinley – weather permitting...
At the time of our arrival it looked more like this. We could see none of the mountains described on the board.
With our cancelled flight, we were very early, so our room wasn’t ready. We used the time to walk a circular trail that started behind the hotel. With the mossy trees it felt like walking through an enchanted forest.
During our walk, the weather cleared up. So we took our car and drove to town, which wasn’t even 3 minutes away. The following photos basically show you everything there is in Talkeetna. It really is a small town...
By the way, don’t be surprised, the photos weren’t all taken on this rainy day (of which I deleted most of the photos).
Birgit thinks of Talkeetna as very sweet and placid. I would say it´s where “hippies meet the Waltons” – but it is definitely very cute.
That was in fact the entire place!
For dinner we went to the Brewhouse, which was as quaint inside as it looked from the outside.
